What to wear to a music festival

Festival fashion has gotten a bad reputation over the last couple of years. Lately all you can see are denim cutoffs short enough to qualify as underwear and flower crowns and it's easy to end up looking like a hippie disaster. Personally, I can't think of many things that are more fun than spending a weekend outdoors listening to great music but there's a fine line between dressing in celebration of your favorite festival and dressing up in a costume.

Much like Fashion Week, music festivals are filled with ladies trying to get their pictures taken but that certainly doesn't mean that the "less is more" philosophy should guide them.

By following just a few guidelines, you'll be able to avoid looking like a cliché:

Wear comfortable shoes. You will be walking miles on your feet all day and night, so make sure you bring cute shoes you can dance in. Heels are an absolute no on the festival grounds.

Music festival recommended shoes

1.Dr. Martens- LUISAVIAROMA.COM, 185$
2.Sunset sky sandal- MODCLOTH.COM, 30$
3.Jeffery Campbell dalt cutout oxfords- SHOPBOP.COM, 160$
4.Keds sneakers- KEDS.COM, 40$
5.Michael Kors billy studded fringe sandal- NEIMANMARCUS.COM, 150$
6.Derby lace-up espadrille flat- NEIMANMARCUS.COM, 65$
7.Steve Madden cinch-black suede- HEELS.COM,130$
8.Vans authentic leopard trainers- ASOS.COM, 52£
9.Jarrad ankle booties- ninewest.com, 119$

Limit yourself to one piece of any of the following: Tribal print, fringe, crochet or a flower crown. Piling on trends is a popular festival mistake while you should just stick to one bohemian piece.
How to do it right:

How to mess it up:
                                                                  Bella Thorne
                                                          Alessandra Ambrosio
                                                                Victoria Justice
                                                     Kendall and Kylie Jenner

A bathing suit is not an outfit. Wearing a tasteful one piece with a pair of jeans shorts is one thing, but walking around with a bikini top is a big no no.
How to do it right:
                                                                      Lorde

How to mess it up:
                                                            Vanessa Hudgens

Layering is the key. The weather is always a wild card. Have fun with your outerwear: an army jacket, an over-sized embroidered jeans jacket or even a sweatshirt are all easy to tie around your waist during the day and throw on once it gets dark.

Music Festivals to check out:

1.Electric Daisy Carnival

When: June 20-22
Where: Las Vegas
Why You Should Go:The acts perform between sunset and sunrise as opposed to during the day. Make sure you stay hydrated – you'll get surprisingly tired considering the sun's not out – but besides that, it's a blast of a festival.

2.Bonnaroo

When: June 12-15
Where: Manchester, Tennessee
2014 Lineup Highlights: Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Skrillex, The Avett Brothers, Elton John, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Lionel Richie, the Arctic Monkeys.
Why You Should Go: It's one of the greatest camping experiences at any festival in the world and the organizers constantly deliver a fantastic lineup. Once you survive four days sleeping outside and watching awesome bands in the intense Tennessee heat, no one will doubt your festival experience.

3.Firefly Music Festival

When: June 19-22
Where: Dover, Delaware
2014 Lineup Highlights: Foo Fighters, OutKast, Jack Johnson, Imagine Dragons, Pretty Lights, the Lumineers, Arctic Monkeys, Weezer.
Why You Should Go: Firefly can still be classified as a start-up, only launching in 2012. But the festival claims a unique home in the beautiful woodlands of Delaware and has two powerful lineups. There's camping available as well, so you can make a lot out of this fest!

4.Lollapalooza

When: August 1-3
Where: Chicago, Illinois
2014 Lineup Highlights: Eminem, OutKast, Kings of Leon, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Lorde, Childish Gambino, Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Azalea.
Why You Should Go: It has a great reputation as one of the most organized festivals in the country. In 2012 when a storm shut things down for part of the weekend sets were rescheduled and the show impressively went on.

Celeb Halloween costumes

Heidi Klum at the 2013 Heidi Klum Halloween Party

Yes, that really is Heidi. The supermodel is know for going over-the-top for Halloween and this old lady costume definitely didn’t disappoint, even though I'm pretty sure she’ll age a bit more gracefully in real life.
Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen
Your guess is as good as mine as for what these two are supposed to be, but one thing I'm sure of is that Sacha chose this costume.

Perez Hilton at the 2013 Heidi Klum Halloween Party

Just like Miley, he can't stop; Hilton updated the look with sharp, vampire fangs.
Vanessa Hudgens at the 2013 Casamigos Halloween Party
Angels can apparently be bohemian, too. Vanessa's heavenly version included a halo, wings and fluffy white boots.

Jay Manual at the 2013 Heidi Klum Halloween Party

The make-up artist is ready for warfare in this gladiator meets fantasy ensemble.

Ashley Madekwe

Madekwe arrived at a Halloween party looking catty in winter whites, her boyfriend accompanied her as Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Michelle Trachtenberg at the 2013 Casamigos Halloween Party
Michelle's eclectic getup could be a witch's wardrobe. Her web-accented face makeup took the look up a notch.
Sandra Bullock and Louis Bullock Trick-or-Treating
Sandra took her adorable son out trick-or-treating wearing a fisherman’s uniform complete with long gray beard. The best part is that Melissa McCarthy tagged along in a matching fisherman costume.
Naya Rivera at Kate Hudson’s Pre-Halloween Party
Carmen Sandiego was finally discovered making her way into Kate's Halloween bash. Naya completed the look with a wide-brimmed hat, a colorful trench, thigh-high black boots and a briefcase.
Miley Cyrus Dressed as Lil’ Kim
What, you thought Miley Cyrus would cover up for Halloween? The twerk-happy pop star dressed as Lil' Kim at the 1999 MTV VMAs. And Lil' Kim approved, tweeting "Awwww. Look at my baby @mileycyrus tonight!!! Looking GORGEOUS!!!".
Kelly Osbourne at MAC Cosmetics and Rick Baker’s Monster Mash
Kelly's Dame Edna Everage costume was definitely one of the most colorful. I have a sneaking suspicion that she already had the wig, boa and embellished glasses in her closet.

Adam Lambert at Halloweenie 2013 Benefiting Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles

Got three wishes? Adam's imposing genie might not be able to grant any real wishes, but at least he got to cover himself in blue makeup.

Iggy Azalea at the VEVO Halloween Showcase

Iggy’s Cruella de Vil costume came complete with a Dalmatian. I just hope that her coat wasn’t made of real dog fur.

Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber at the 2013 Casamigos Halloween Party

Cindy's ode to Slash was surprisingly spot-on, especially with her husband serving as Axl Rose for the evening. I'm sure she drew on her supermodel days back in the 90s for inspiration.

Kate Upton

Kate Upton blended themes, pairing Dia de los Muertos face make up with a sexy Marie Antoinette ensemble.
